"You don't have to have everything figured out before beginning therapy. Sometimes the first step is simply a conversation with someone who will listen."
Reaching out for therapy can be difficult. Sometimes we know exactly what is troubling us, and sometimes we simply know that something in our lives or relationships isn't working the way we would like. Michael's goal is to provide a comfortable, respectful, and nonjudgmental environment where you can talk openly, feel heard, and begin working toward meaningful change.
Michael B. Smith is a therapist and Registered Clinical Social Work Intern holding a Doctorate in Clinical Sexology, a Master's Degree in Social Work, and advanced training in relational hypnotherapy. His clinical background spans individuals, families, adolescents, and groups, as well as helping clients navigate complex family and social systems.
He believes therapy should be a collaborative process. Rather than approaching every person with the same formula, Michael works to understand your individual circumstances, relationships, strengths, and goals, drawing on systemic, cognitive-behavioral, reality-based, and solution-focused approaches to help you identify possibilities and develop practical ways to move forward.
His doctoral training in Clinical Sexology brings particular depth to concerns involving intimacy, sexuality, communication, and personal well-being. These are deeply personal subjects, and Michael believes they deserve to be approached with openness, sensitivity, and respect, without judgment. He has also worked extensively with relationship difficulties, family history, professional conflict, abuse and neglect, and behavioral and emotional challenges.
Many years of international work in hospitality and luxury-yacht environments gave Michael a broad perspective on people and relationships, and a strong ability to communicate across very different backgrounds. His approach is grounded in listening carefully, finding common ground, and recognizing the strengths people already possess, even when those strengths are difficult to see in themselves.
